Born in Liverpool in 1847, Amelia Jemima Moss was the youngest daughter of John Barrow Moss (1803-1879), a decorator and plumber who was also an amateur photographer. Her mother was Ann Birmingham née Kirkby.

She was baptised on 27 July 1847 at St Peter’s, Liverpool.

She appears on the 1861 census living with her family in West Derby, Lancashire. Her father described himself as a ‘Master Painter employing 4 men [and] 1 boy.’

Amelia Jemima Moss died on 21 September 1865 at 34 West Derby Street, West Derby. The cause of death was 'Disease of the valves of the heart, 1 year' and 'Phthisis pulmonalis' [tuberculosis of the lungs].

An inked inscription verso in a period hand reads: ‘Amelia J. Moss / died September 21 / 1865 Aged 18 / years — taken in / May 1865.’
