Monks of the Grand St Bernard Hospice

Monks of the Grand St Bernard Hospice

A carte-de-visite showing some of the priests of the Grand St Bernard Hospice at the Grand St Bernard Pass in Switzerland. Officially the brothers were known as the Canons Regular of the Hospitaller Congregation of Great Saint Bernard.

The pass connects the canton of Valais in Switzerland with the Valley of Aosta region in Italy. The hospice, visible in the background of the portrait, was named after its founder St Bernard of Menthon (also known as St Bernard of Aosta).

Photographed by William England.

The same image was also available as a stereoview.
