Cetshwayo, King of the Zulu

Cetshwayo, King of the Zulu

A carte-de-visite showing Cetshwayo, the King of the Zulus, sitting on the steam ship Natal which was taking him into exile at Cape Town after his defeat by the British in the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879.

He was allowed to return to his people in 1883 but died at Eshowe on 8 February 1884, possibly from a heart attack.

Photographed by Crewes and Van Laun of Cape Town.

The photograph was entered at Stationers’ Hall on 13 October 1879; the copyright owner and author of the work was Charles Frederick Crewes of 8 Tyndale Terrace, Canonbury Square, London.

Another photograph taken on the same occasion shows the king four wives sitting on the same spot.
