Charles Swift

Charles Swift

A carte-de-visite portrait of a petulant young man wearing a high-crown bowler.

A pencilled inscription verso in a 20th-century hand (presumably a transcription from an album page) identifies him as 'Charles Swift.' There is a 24-year-old chemist with this name in Preston on the 1871 census, which may or may not be him. By 1901 he had become an innkeeper in Birmingham.

Photographed by William Wilson of Preston in Lancashire.
