Hon. Charles Dawson Plunkett


Born in Ireland in or about 1816, the Honourable Charles Dawson Plunkett was the son of Thomas Oliver Plunkett, 11th Baron Louth, and his wife Margaret née Plunkett.

He gained the rank of Major-General in the service of the 1st Foot Regiment.

He appears on the 1871 census living at Carlton Chambers in London’s Regent Street. He gave ‘Major General retired’ as his profession.

On 22 August 1874 he married Harriet Amelia Warner, daughter of Biddulph Warner. Their marriage produced one daughter.

The Honourable Charles Dawson Plunkett died on 19 May 1886.

‘We regret to announce the death of Major-General the Hon. Charles Dawson Plunkett, which took place at his residence, Montebello, Killiney, county Dublin, on the 19th of May. The deceased officer was the son of Thomas Oliver, eleventh Baron Lord Louth, of Louth Hall, Ardee, county Louth. His mother was the Hon. Margaret Plunkett, eldest daughter of Randal, thirteenth Lord Dunsany. He entered the army as ensign, 1st Royals, on the 11th of October, 1833; was promoted lieutenant the 10th of March, 1837; captain, 29th of December, 1842; Major, 30th of June 1854; Lieut. Colonel, the 2nd of November, 1868, with the rank of Major General. He served in Canada during the rebellion of 1837 and 1838; also the Eastern campaign of 1854 and 1855, including the battle of Alma and Inkerman siege, and fall of Sebastopol. Medal with three clasps, and brevet of Lieut. Colonel, Knight of the Legion of Honour, Sardinian and Turkish medals, and fifth clasp of the Medjedie. He received the good service pension, 1868’ (Dublin Daily Express, 1 June 1886).
