Children of William Bateman-Hanbury

An inscription on the album page identifies the sitters as the ‘Honourables Spencer, Maud and Evelyn Hanbury.'

These are three of the ten children of William Bateman-Hanbury, 2nd Baron Bateman of Kelmarsh Hall in Northamptonshire, whose father had adopted the additional surname Bateman by Royal License in 1837. Their mother was Agnes Burrell née Kerrison, daughter of General Sir Edward Kerrison, 1st Bt.

The Honourable Maud Frances Bateman-Hanbury was born on 19 July 1855. She married the Reverend and Honourable Archibald Parker, son of Thomas Parker, 6th Earl of Macclesfield. She died on 23 February 1932.

The Honourable William Spencer Bateman-Hanbury was born on 30 September 1856 and was baptised on 15 August 1855 at Richmond in Surrey. He was educated at Eton. He gained the rank of Captain in the service of the 2nd Life Guards. He succeeded his father, becoming the 3rd Baron Bateman of Shobdon on 30 November 1901. On 23 July 1904 at St George’s, Hanover Square, he became the second husband of widow Marion Alice Knapp, daughter of James Jeffrey Graham. Lord Shobdon died , aged 75, on 4 November 1931 at 7 rue de la Chaise, Paris, though his usual address appears to have been 37, rue de la Université, Paris. He left no issue and an estate valued at £65. On his death the barony became extinct.

The Honourable Evelyn Augusta Bateman-Hanbury was born on 28 August 1858. ON 16 September 1884 she married Robert John Foster, son of William Foster. She died, aged 49, on 7 July 1908.

The family appear on the 1871 living at Shobdon Hall in Herefordshire. The household include 18 servants.
