Children of William Bateman-Hanbury


An inscription on the album page identifies the sitters as the ‘Honourables Gertrude, Edward and Walter Hanbury.

These are three of the ten children of William Bateman-Hanbury, 2nd Baron Bateman of Kelmarsh Hall in Northamptonshire, whose father had adopted the additional surname Bateman by Royal License in 1837. Their mother was Agnes Burrell née Kerrison, daughter of General Sir Edward Kerrison, 1st Bt.

The Honourable Edward Reginald Bateman-Hanbury was born on 30 May 1859 at Brook Street in London. On 23 October 1880 he enlisted in the Rifle Brigade. He died on 1 June 1907 at Talbot House nursing home, 87 Belgrave Road, Pimlico.

Born at Brook Street in London in 1861, the Honourable Gertrude Emily Bateman-Hanbury married Sir John Wood, 1st Bt, on 11 February 1892 at Hoxne in Norfolk. The Honourable Lady Gertrude Emily Wood of Engrave Hall, Bury St Edmunds, died on 15 March 19127 at 9 Manville Place in Marylebone, London. She left an estate valued at £7169.

The Honourable Walter Bateman-Hanbury was born in 1863, also at Brook Street in London. He appears never to have married and he died without issue. His residences were Brome Hall at Eye in Suffolk and Sulby House at Leamington. He died at Brome Hall on 21 February 1904, leaving an estate valued at £13,312,

The family appear on the 1871 living at Shobdon Hall in Herefordshire. The household include 18 servants.
