Lady Ida Lumley and unidentified sitter


Born on 28 November 1848 at Tickhill Castle in Yorkshire, Lady Ida Frances Annabella Lumley was the daughter of Richard George Lumley, 9th Earl of Scarbrough, and his wife Frederic Mary Adeliza née Drummond. She was baptised at Tickhill on 10 February 1849.

On 7 September 1869 at Maltby in Yorkshire she married George Cecil Orlando Bridgeman, who in 1898 succeeded his father and became the 4th Earl of Bradford. Their marriage produced seven children.

Lady Bradford died on 22 August 1936 at the age of 87. She was buried on 25 August 1936 at St Andrew’s in Weston-under-Lizard in Staffordshire.

‘The death is announced today of the Dowager Countess of Bradford, in her 88th year. Lady Bradford , who lived at Castle Bromwich, Birmingham, was the daughter of the ninth Earl of Scarborough [sic] and sister of the present Earl. She was married in 1860 to Viscount Newport, who became fourth Earl of Bradford in 1898 and died in 1915’ (Coventry Evening Telegraph, 24 August 1936).
