Isabella Murray Stuart and Hannah Jane Marsland

A carte-de-visite showing graves in the churchyard of St Catherine's in Ventnor on the Isle of Wight.

On the left is the grave of Isabella Murray Stuart, daughter of William Stuart of Edinburgh; she died, aged 17, on 15 October 1864. The last line of her inscription reads: 'Erected by her mother.' According to an announcement of her death in the Dundee Courier (19 October 1864), she was the 'youngest daughter of the late Wm. Stuart, Esq., Exchequer, Edinburgh.'

On the right is the grave of Hannah Jane Marsland, daughter of John and Ann Marsland of Bradford in Yorkshire; she died at Ventnor, aged 23, on 26 April 1864. When the census was taken in 1861, Hannah was a 'house servant' at Thornton in Yorkshire and her mother Ann was a 'worsted warper.' Her father was elsewhere the night of the census.

Photographed by Fletcher Moor of Ventnor on the Isle of Wight.
