Lady Burton

Lady Burton

Identified simply as ‘Lady Burton’ on the album page, this is probably the wife of the Irish peer Sir Charles Burton.

Born on 26 February 1828 at 36 Brook Street in London, Georgina Mary Dallas was the daughter of David Haliburton Dallas and his wife Mary Anne née Yorke. She was baptised at Walcot St Swithin in Bath on 23 March 1828.

On 15 December 1861 at St George’s, Hanover Square, she married Sir Charles William Cuffe Burtton, 5th Baron Burton of Dublin.

The couple lived at Pollacton (or Pollerton) House in County Carlow.

Sir Charles Burton died on 2 October 1902.

Lady Burton died, aged 75, at her residence in Ireland on 15 March 1904.

‘The death occurred on Tuesday, at her residence, Pollacton, co. Carlow, of Lady Burton, widow of the late Sir Charles William Cuffe Burton, fifth and last baronet. Death was due to bronchial affection. Lady Burton, who had experienced a tedious illness, was a daughter of the late Mr David Haliburton Dallas, G.C.B.’ (Abingdon Free Press, 18 March 1904).

‘The remains of Georgina Mary Dallas Lady Burton, widow of Sir Charles William Cuffe Burton, Bart, D L, of Pollacton, Carlow, were laid to rest on Saturday in Killeshin Cemetery, Carlow-Graigue. For some months the deceased lady had been in very delicate health, but up to a few weeks ago her recovery was hopefully anticipated, and the announcement of her death early on Tuesday morning came as a great shock to her numerous friends. The name of Lady Burton in the district where she had resided for so many years during her married life, and subsequently during her brief widowhood, was a synonym for charity, which she dispensed with a lavish hand, but in the most unostentatious and impartial manner. The poor in Carlow have in her death lost the best of friends, and in particular the aged and infirm and the children of the workhouse, who were frequently recipients of her benevolence’ (Carlow Nationalist, 26 March 1904).
