John Alexander Daniel

John Alexander Daniel

An inked inscription verso in a period hand reads: ‘John Alexander Daniel / Born 8th Feb. 1862.’

Born on 8 February 1862, John Alexander Daniel was the son of John Stewart Daniel and his wife Mary Matilda Daniel née Mason, who were married on 3 October 1860 at St Thomas’s in Winchester.

He was baptised at Winchester on 27 July 1862. His father’s profession was recorded as ‘Sergeant Scots Fusiliers.’

The 1861 census had recorded his father as 'John S. Daniels' [sic], a ‘Recruiting Sergeant [in the] Scots Fusilier Guards.’ Born in Scotland, he was 37 at the time of the census. His wife Mary, born at Twyford in Hampshire, was 29 years old.

John Stewart Daniel died on 15 March 1867 at Winchester, leaving an estate valued at £100.

John Alexander Daniels [sic] died in 1868. He was 6 years old. His death was registered in Winchester.

He is probably seen here with his mother, who appears on the 1881 census as a 42-year-old [sic] widow living at 64 Sussex Street in Winchester with her 14-year-old daughter Annie and two lodgers. She gave ‘Needlewoman’ as her profession.

I have been unable to trace her death.
