Viscount Lumley and Lady Lilian Lumley

Viscount Lumley and Lady Lilian Lumley

Born in 1851, Lady Lilian Lumley was the daughter of Richard George Lumley, from 1856 the 9th Earl of Scarbrough and Frederica Mary Adeliza née Drummond.

On 3 August 1871 she married Lawrence Dundas, from 1873 the 3rd Earl of Zetland, son of the Hon. John Charles Dundas.

Her husband was created the 1st Marquess of Zetland on 22 August 1892 and Lady Lilian became the Marchioness of Zetland.

Lady Zetland died on 24 December 1943.

‘The Dowager Marchioness of Zetland, widow of the first Marquess and mother of the present Marquess, died last Friday at Marske Hall, near Redcar, at the age of 92. […] Lilian, Marchioness of Zetland, formerly Lady Lilian Lumley, was the third daughter of the 9th Earl of Scarbrough and one of a family the members of which have always given themselves in public service. She was born in 1851, being six years older than her brother, the present Lord Scarbrough, and was married in 1871. Her husband, then Mr Lawrence Dundas, was the elder son of Mr John Charles Dundas, of Woodhall, Wetherby, who represented the Richmond Division in Parliament, as his son and grandson were to do after him. Two years after their marriage Mr Lawrence Dundas succeeded his uncle in the earldom of Zetland and within twenty years he was created a Marquess for his Lord-Lieutenancy of Ireland during the troubled times of the Balfour regime — work in which he was much helped but the kindliness of his wife. […] Until recently, despite her age, she was often seen in the village, on shopping excursions in Redcar, or driving over the moors to some meeting. She must have been patron, if not president, of at least a score of societies, to all of which she gave not only money but a lively interest’ (Yorkshire Post and Leeds Intelligencer, 28 December 1943).

Styled Viscount Lumley, the Honourable Lyulph Richard Granby William Lumley was the eldest son of Richard George Lumley, from 1856 the 9th Earl of Scarbrough, and Frederick Mary Adeliza née Drummond.

Born on 7 June 1850, he died on 23 August 1868 at the age of 18.
