Queen Louise of Denmark

A hand-coloured carte-de-visite portrait of Crown Princess Louise of Denmark, mother of Princess Alexandra of Denmark, who married the Prince of Wales in 1863.

The sitting may be dated quite accurately since the royal visit to the photographers’ studio was mentioned in the Photographic News on 16 October 1863.

The following month Crown Princess Louise's husband succeeded to the Danish throne, becoming King Christian IX of Denmark. Louise became the Queen of Denmark.

Queen Louise died, aged 81, at Bernstorff Palace on 29 September 1898.
