The Countess of Flanders


A hand-coloured carte-de-visite portrait of the Countess of Flanders, sister-in-law of Léopold II, King of the Belgians.

Born Princess Marie Luise of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen in 1845, she was a daughter of Prince Karl Anton of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen and Princess Josephine of Baden.

On 25 April 1867 she married Prince Philippe, Count of Flanders, second son of King Leopold I of Belgium and Louise-Marie of Orléans. The couple had five children, one of whom became King Albert I of Belgium in 1909.

Marie Luise died in Belgium in 1912, at the age of 67. She was buried in the Church of Our Lady of Laeken.
