Edward and Marcus Beresford


Edward and Marcus Beresford were the sons of George de la Poer Beresford and his wife Mary Annabella née Harcourt. Marcus William de la Poer Beresford was born on 8 May 1862 at Bolton Percy in Yorkshire; Edward Beresford was born on 11 September 1863 at Killashandra in County Cavan, Ireland.

Their father was later the Member of Parliament for Armagh from 1875 to 1885. Their grandfather, the Most Reverend Marcus Gervais Beresford, was the Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland from 1862 until his death in 1885.

Captain Marcus William de la Poer Beresford died on 8 August 1900 at Srinagar in Kashmir, leaving an estate valued at £2000.

‘Capt. Marcus William de la Poer Beresford, 3rd Batn. Rifle Brigade who was in Cashmere on a shooting expedition, was killed on Wednesday by a fall from his horse. Born May 8, 1862, he was a son of Mr G. de la P. Beresford, his mother being a sister of Sir William Harcourt. He joined the South Staffordshire Regiment as Lieut. from the Militia Jan. 30, 1884; was transferred to the Rifle Brigade May 28, 1884; and became Captain Nov. 8, 1892’ (Army and Navy Gazette, 11 August 1900).

Edward Beresford married Lilian Florence Moreton in Kensington on 30 April 1903.

He died on 18 June 1939 at Princess Beatrice Hospital in Earl’s Court, London, leaving an estate valued at £3220. His address at the time of his death was 30 Redcliffe [Gardens?], Earl’s Court.
