Frederick Wilbraham Egerton


Born at Dunnington in Yorkshire on 8 December 1838, Frederick Wilbraham Egerton was the son of Reverend Thomas Egerton and his wife Charlotte Catherine née Milner. He was baptised at Dunnington on 6 January 1839.

He rose to the rank of Rear-Admiral in the service of the Royal Navy.

On 5 November 1879 at St Paul’s in Valetta, Malta, Commander Frederick Wilbraham Egerton married Mary Augusta Phipps Hornby, second daughter of Admiral of the Fleet Sir Geoffrey Thomas Phipps Hornby, KCB.

Rear-Admiral Egerton died on 4 January 1909 at Cheriton Cottage, Alresford, Hampshire. He left an estate valued at £38,109.

According to his obituary in the Army and Navy Gazette (9 January 1909): ‘Rear Admiral Frederick Wilbraham Egerton, retired, died on the 4th inst. at Cheriton Cottage, Alresford, aged 70.

‘Joining the Service Jan. 30, 1853, he became Acting Mate Feb. 1, 1859, and in that rank served during the China War, when he was employed in cutting the boom across the mouth of the Peiho River on June 24, 1859 (medal). He was promoted to Lieutenant July 19, 1859; Commander Dec. 29, 1871; Captain Dec. 31, 1881; and retired Jan. 1, 1885, being advanced to the rank of Rear-Admiral Nov. 9, 1896.’
