An inked inscription verso in a period hand identifies the sitter as ‘Robert Gale Cave / when at the age / of 7 years / 1865.’

A pencilled inscription on the album page in a later hand further identifies him as ‘G. Tory’s brother / A. Amy’s husband / house in Dorchester.’

Born at Sturminster Marshall in Dorset in 1857, Robert Gale Cave was the son of Edward William Cave and his wife Elizabeth née Gale.

On 11 June 1900 at Dorchester he enlisted in the Imperial Yeomanry for the duration of ‘the War in South Africa.’

On 26 July 1906 he married Amy Rachel Dunning. The couple appear on the 1911 census living at Almer near Blandford in Dorset. Like his father before him, Robert was a farmer.

Robert Gale Cave died on 5 December 1926 at Rowan House, Dorchester, leaving an estate valued at £47,929

His sister Elizabeth Gale Cave married Henry Joseph Saunders Tory.
