Cecilia Jenny Newcome

Cecilia Jenny Newcome

Born at Courteenhall House in Northamptonshire in 1836, Cecilia Jenny Newcome was the daughter of Henry Newcome and his wife Cecilia née Wake. She was baptised at Courteenhall on 21 July 1836.

In 1851 she was living at 16 Lower Rock Gardens, just off Marine Parade in Brighton. The head of the household was her widowed mother Cecilia, a ‘Fundholder.’ Also present on the night of the census were her younger siblings Georgiana (12) and Henry (4), and one female servant.

Ten years later the family were one street further east along Marine Parade at 5 Atlingworth Street. The household now included three female servants.

Cecilia and Georgiana never married; they lived at this address with their mother until her death, aged 88, in 1896.

Georgiana Anne Newcome died at 5 Atlingworth Street on 17 January 1909, leaving an estate valued at £23,227.

Cecilia Jenny Newcome died at the same address on 18 July 1923; she was 87 years old. Her estate was valued at £22,535.

[From an album probably compiled by the sitter’s aunt. The majority of the portraits in the album show members of the Newcome and Mangles families. The person who linked the two families was Harriet Mangles née Newcome, who in 1830 married Ross Donnelly Mangles, the Member of Parliament for Guildford from 1841 to 1857 and later Chairman of the East India Company.]
