General Garibaldi with Docteur Nélanton

General Garibaldi with Docteur Nélanton

A fabricated image, part collage and part illustration, purporting to show Giuseppe Garabildi, the hero of the Italian Risorgimentio, with the French physician and surgeon Auguste Nélanton (1807-1873) after he had been shot in the foot on 28 August 1862 during a skirmish on the Aspromonte Massif. The fighting ended quickly, as Garibaldi forbade his men to return fire on fellow subjects of the Kingdom of Italy; the General was captured and imprisoned at Virignano near La Spezie, where he underwent a painful operation to repair his damaged foot.

According to the caption printed in French in the lower margin, the carte de visite commemorates the moment when Doctor Nélanton announced that an amputation would not be necessary.

Photographed by Pierre Warner of Paris.
