Arthur Brown appears on the 1871 census, living with his family on Dundas Street in Saltburn-by-the-Sea. Aged 48 at the time of the census, he was born at Steyning in Sussex in 1822. In addition to his profession as a 'Photographist,' he was also the town's 'Post Master.' His wife Janet was a British Subject born in Trinidad. Also present on the night of the census were their son Allan (23), a 'Telegraphist,' daughter Edith (19), a 'Governess,' daughter Gertrude (17), an 'Assistant in Post Office' and daughter Bertha (12), a 'Scholar,' The household also included one servant.
Ten years earlier he had been a 'Photographer' at Barnard Castle in County Durham.
