Augusta Catherine Gulston

Augusta Catherine Gulston

Born in Brighton in or about 1819, Augusta Catherine Giveen was the only daughter of Captain Robert Giveen of the 10th Hussars and Caroline Lambert. She was baptised on 14 April 1819 at St Nicholas Church in Brighton.

On 22 December 1841 at Llandilofawr she married Alan James Gulston of Llandilofawr, in Carmarthenshire (Morning Post, 31 December 1841). Their marriage produced seven children.

The family appear on the 1861 census living at Llwynyberllan, a house in Llandilofawr. The household included three servants and three agricultural labourers.

Alan James Gulston, Justice of the Peace and Deputy-Lieutenant for the county of Carmarthenshire, died on 8 August 1886 at St Peter Port in Guernsey, leaving an estate valued at £2744. His body was returned to Wales and buried in ‘the new family vault in Caledfwich churchyard’ (South Wales Daily News, 16 August 1886).

Augusta Catherine Gulston ‘late of Derwydd, Llandilo, in the County of Carmarthenshire’ died, aged 68, on 23 January 1887 at the Cawdor Arms Hotel in Llandilo. ‘The deceased lady arrived in company with two nieces and her maid at the hotel a week previously. She was then complaining of a cold, and Dr Lloyd's services were obtained. He, finding her state becoming precarious, called in the further assistance of Dr Thomas, Llandovery. However, at about midnight Mrs Gulston died, the cause of death being mainly heart disease. At one time the family had large connections in the town, and by those to whom the deceased lady was known her death is much regretted’ (Carmarthen Weekly Reporter, 28 January 1887).
