Mr and Mrs Hawksley

Mr and Mrs Hawksley

A carte-de-visite portrait of a fashionably dressed young couple. According to an inscription on the album page, they are 'Mr and Mrs Hawksley' and they were photographed at Priory House in Bodmin, Cornwall.

An online search confirms that this is indeed the entrance to Priory House, and that it remains largely unchanged to this day. Priory House was the residence of Colonel Walter Raleigh Gilbert (1813-1896), for many years the Chief Constable of Cornwall.

Photographed by the banker and amateur photographer William Peters of Ashfold House, Slaugham, Sussex. William Peters's daughter Marianne was the wife of Colonel Gilbert.
