Charles Daly in 'The Willow Pattern Plate'

Charles Daly in 'The Willow Pattern Plate'

From an album of theatrical carte-de-visite portraits compiled by the actor (later actor-manager) Charles Daly. Amongst many better known celebrities of the stage, the album contains nearly twenty portraits showing Daly himself dressed as various characters in popular successes of the day.

According to an inked inscription on the album page, this particular portrait shows Daly as the character 'Chang' in Francis's Talfourd's The Willow Pattern Plate, a 'New Chinese Burlesque' first performed at the Strand Theatre in December 1851 (The Era, 21 December 1851).

Photographed by John Hubbard of 1 Oxford Street, London.
