Born at Hollington in Staffordshire in or about 1837, Peter Ascough Rayner appears on the 1871 census, aged 37, living at 175 Buxton Road in Leek with his wife Ann and their four children. For his profession, he gave 'Photographer, Music Seller, Bookseller, and Smallware Dealer.'
