Sir Thomas Gladstone M.P.


A carte-de-visite portrait of the Tory (later Conservative) politician Sir Thomas Gladstone (1804-1889), 2nd Baronet Gladstone of Fasque. His younger brother was the Liberal Prime Minister William Gladstone.

Born in Liverpool on 25 July 1804, he was the eldest son (and second child) of the wealthy Scottish-born businessman John Gladstone (born Gladstones) and his second wife Anne MacKenzie Robertson.

Sir Thomas Gladstone was Member of Parliament for Queenborough from 1830 to 1831, for Portarlington from 1832 to 1835, for Leicester from 1835 to 1837, and (briefly) for Ipswich in 1842. He was Lord Lieutenant of Kincardineshire from 1876 until his death. He died on 20 March 1889.
