Agnes Adeline Howard


A carte-de-visite portrait of Agnes Adeline Howard, later Mrs Howard Ryland.

Born in 1853, she was the daughter of Frederick Howard, a manufacturer of agricultural implements.

On 9 February 1876 she married Howard Proctor Ryland (1851-1905) at St Cuthbert’s in Bedford. According to the 1881 census, her husband was an ‘Agricultural Chemist.’ The couple were living at Sutton Coldfield in Warwickshire. Their marriage produced one son, Thomas Howard Ryland, and two daughters.

She died, aged 53, on 18 July 1906, at ‘Chalford,’ a large house in Belwell Lane, Four Oaks, near Sutton Coldfield in Warwickshire. She left effects valued at £10,815.

An inked inscription verso in a period hand identifies the sitter and gives the date, August 1874.
