A carte-de-visite portrait of an Indian or Singhalese man.

Photographed by A.J. Pannell and Co of Liverpool.

The photographer is Anne Jane Pannell or one of her children. Widowed in 1862, Anne appears on the 1881 census as a 'Stationer' living at 53 Byron Street in Liverpool. Her 24-year-old son, John Levi Pannell, gave 'Photographer' as his profession, while her 20-year-old daughter, Edith Roscoe Pannell, described herself as a 'Photographic Artist.'
