St Thomas Street, Weymouth

A topographical carte-de-visite showing St Thomas Street in Weymouth, looking NE from the corner of St Edmund Street.

The premises on the left in the foreground belong to a chemist and druggist by the name of Mason. According to the 1871 census, this is Arthur Mason, 37 years old and unmarried, from Maidstone in Kent. Also present on the night of the census at 52 St Thomas Street were an assistant and a servant.

The name Seymour may be read above the door of the house opposite, on the corner of St Edmund Street. These are the premises of Benjamin Seymour, a 62-year-old ironmonger from Poole. With him on the night of the census at 15 St Edmund Street were his wife Rebecca, their three daughters, two sons and two servants.

Photographed by William Barrett of South Street in Bridport, Dorset.

William Barrett was 53 at the time of the 1871 census. He came from Sidmouth in Devon.
