Marie Brema

Marie Brema

A cabinet card portrait of Marie Brema (1856-1925), an English dramatic mezzo-soprano singer in concert, operatic and oratorio work. Born in Liverpool of German-American parents, she was the first British-born singer to appear at the Beyreuth festival (Ortrud in Lohengrin, 1894) and was associated particularly with the Wagner repertory. She created several important roles, including the part of the Angel in Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius (1900).

Photographed by Elliott and Fry of 55 Baker Street, London.
