Euphrosyne Parepa-Rosa

Euphrosyne Parepa-Rosa

A carte-de-visite portrait of the soprano Euphrosyne Parepa, later Parepa-Rosa.

Born in Edinburgh on 7 May 1836, she made her first public appearance at Malta at the age of sixteen. She first sang in London in 1857, where she was well received, and remained for the following nine years. During this time in England she married a British officer but he died shortly after their marriage. In 1867 she met and married the violinist Carl Rosa during a tour of the United States. The tour began with concert work but afterwards she took to opera. From 1869 to 1872 Parepa and Rosa organized an English Opera Company, touring the larger American cities with Parepa as the star.

Euphrosyne Parepa-Rosa died in London on 21 January 1874 at the age of 37.
