Young girl with dead bird

Young girl with dead bird

A carte-de-visite portrait of an unidentified girl, sitting on the floor next to an empty birdcage. She's holding a bird in her left hand which may or may not be a stuffed studio prop.

Photographed by the Photographic Portraiture Company of New Bond Street, London.

Unusually, the date is printed recto in the margin, next to the studio's name. The photograph was apparently taken on 1 September 1863. And interestingly, the studio's prices are printed verso along the lower edge of the mount: cartes-de-visite were 4 for 5 shillings, 10 for 10 shillings, or 25 for 21 shillings (a guinea).
