View across the river at Rochester

A topographical carte-de-visite showing a view of Rochester in Kent, including Rochester Bridge on the left of the image and the castle on the far right. The cathedral, which was without its spire between 1823 and 1904, can be seen between to the left of the castle. The photographer has situated himself on the Strood side of the Medway, with two figures – a working-class man and a smartly dressed girl – in the foreground to add human interest.

Photographed by Russell Sedgfield, published by Provost and Co. of Covent Garden, and sold by J.H. Goldwin of Rochester.
