Victoria Van de Weyer

Victoria Van de Weyer (Mrs Henry Brand)

A carte-de-visite portrait of Victoria Alexandrina Leopoldine Van de Weyer, daughter of the Belgian ambassador Jean-Sylvain Van de Weyer and his American wife Elizabeth Anne Sturgis née Bates, only daughter of Joshua Bates of Barings Bank.

Born in London in 1842, probably at 50 Portland Place in Marylebone, she and her parents appear on the 1851 census living at that address. Victoria had one older brother, one younger brother and two younger sisters. In addition, the household comprised 14 servants.

On 21 January 1864 at Bray in Berkshire she married Henry Robert Brand, eldest son of Henry Bouverie William Brand, 1st Viscount Hampden of Glynde. Many years after her death her husband succeeded his father and became 2nd Viscount Hampden.

Mrs Henry Brand died on 20 July 1865, probably at New Lodge, her parent’s home at Bray in Berkshire.

Photographed by Ferdinand Joubert of London.
