Unidentified sitter with dog

Surprisingly, the 1871 census lists George Brooker of 15 Pow Street as a 'ship carver,' nor can this be a transcription error on the part of the enumerator since the 1881 census lists him as a 'retired ship carver.'

Perhaps the fact that photography wasn't Brooker's primary profession explains the unconventional composition of this portrait.
