Photographed by John Cruttenden of Maidstone, Kent.

Born at Maidstone in or about 1825, John Cruttenden appears on the 1861 census, a 'Photographic Artist' living at 98 Week Street in Maidstone with his wife Sophia, their two sons and four daughters. By the time of the 1871 census, the family - now much larger - had moved to 26 Shirland Road in Maida Vale, London. The couple now had six daughters and five sons. John described himself as an 'Artist and Photographer'.

By 1881 he had quit the photographic business and was making his living as a 'Lime and Cement Agent'. The family were living at 193 Buckingham Palace Road in Victoria. In 1891 he was a 'Retired Comm[ercial] Traveller' living at 96 Roundhill Crescent in Brighton. He died in Brighton in 1892.
