A pencilled inscription in a period hand on the reverse of the mount reads Garde du Petit Corps / Opéra, almost certainly a supernumerary with a walk-on part in a ballet or opera.

From an album assembled by Doctor Martin Batt Tanner of Summerlands, Exeter, Devon. An inked inscription on the album’s frontispiece reads ‘Photographs of Celebrities / in 1862 / collected by me whilst residing at the / Rotunda Hospital, Dublin.’

Photographed by Disdéri of Paris.
