The Hursley Choral Society

The Hursley Choral Society

A carte-de-visite portrait of Hursley Choral Society, from the family album of the Reverend John Frewen Moor, Vicar of Ampfield, Hampshire.

Hursley was the neighbouring parish where John Keble, the guiding light of the Oxford Movement, was the vicar. The photograph came with a hand-written key giving the names and professions of all concerned - the bricklayers, the blacksmiths, two hotelkeepers, schoolmasters past and present, a gardener, the doctor, the curate, Mr Keble's groom, the tailor's daughter, and various other wives and daughters.

Reverend John Frewen Moor is the bald man at the centre of the back row. His wife Frances is the elaborately dressed woman in the front row.

Photographed by William Henry Slater of Romsey, Hampshire.
