The Duke of Newcastle and family

The Duke of Newcastle and family

An albumen print showing various members of the Pelham-Clinton family in the late 1860s.

The man standing at the back of the group is Henry Pelham-Clinton (1834-1879), from 1864 the 6th Duke of Newcastle. The woman seated on the left is his wife. Born Henrietta Hope, she was the heiress of the wealthy Henry Thomas Hope. The couple were married in Paris in 1861. As part of the marriage settlement, the groom's debts were paid and an income of £50,000 a year settled on the couple. Extensive lands in England and Ireland were also added to his family's holdings by inheritance from his father-in-law, although Pelham-Clinton himself never controlled them due to the terms of that testament.

The woman seated on the right is the Duke's sister, Lady Susan Vane-Tempest. Her husband, an alcoholic and a lunatic, died in 1864 when he burst a blood vessel while being restrained by four of his keepers. His widow subsequently became the long-term mistress of the Prince of Wales and is believed to have given birth to his illegitimate child at Ramsgate in 1871. She died, possibly of rheumatic fever, at Trouville in 1875.

The man on the right is the Duke's younger brother, Lord Edward Pelham-Clinton (1836-1907).
