An inscription on the album page reads: 'The Cossack held by Charles Head [with] Sambo and Skye.'

Charles Head appears on the 1861 census, the ten-year-old son of George Head of Stansted in Essex. His father was gardener for Thomas G. Luard, the Vicar of Stansted.

From an album compiled during the 1850s and 1860s by Mrs Jane Anne Luard (née Inglis), the wife of Rev. Thomas Garnham Luard (1821-1886), Vicar of Stansted in Essex.
