Sir Ralph Abercromby Anstruther of Balcaskie was born on 1 March 1804 at Grosvenor Street, London, the son of Brigadier-General Robert Anstruther and Lucy Charlotte Hamilton. He succeeded to the title 4th Baronet of Wrae of County Linlithgow on 2 August 1818. He graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1822 with a Master of Arts (M.A.). He gained the rank of captain in the service of the Grenadier Guards. On 2 September 1831 he married Mary Jane Torrens, daughter of Major-General Sir Henry Torrens.

He died, aged 59, on 18 October 1863 at Balcaskie, Fife, Scotland.
