Ships at Marseilles

A topographical carte-de-visite showing ships docked in the harbour at Marseille in southern France, with the masts of the many ships receding into the distance.

An inked inscription verso in a period hand reads: ‘Pont tournant et Port à Marseille / 17-20 October 1863.’ Various other dates in 1864, 1865 and 1866 have been added later, presumably the dates at which the original owner of the carte visited the port.

Photographed by J. Andrieu of Paris. A small paper label identifies the Marseille stockist where the carte was originally purchased.
