Sbiten seller


A pencilled inscription verso in Russian gives the man's profession.

A mixture of honey, water, spices and jam, sbiten is a hot drink traditionally drunk in Russia during the winter. It remained popular with all strata of Russian society until the 19th century when it was replaced by coffee and tea.
