Sbiten seller

A pencilled inscription verso in Russian gives the man's profession.

A mixture of honey, water, spices and jam, sbiten is a hot drink traditionally drunk in Russia during the winter. It remained popular with all strata of Russian society until the 19th century when it was replaced by coffee and tea.

Photographed by William Carrick of St Petersburg.
