Samuel Auchmuty of the 28th Foot

A carte-de-visite portrait of Ensign Samuel Forbes Frederick Auchmuty of the 28th (The North Gloucestershire) Regiment of Foot, photographed in India in 1864 with his dog lying on the table next to him.

According to Hart’s Army List of 1860, Auchmuty joined the army as an Ensign (by purchase) on 13 July 1858.

According to a website dedicated to his family’s genealogy, he was born in 1841 and on 9 September 1864 he married Agnes Sophia Wood in Bombay, India. Their first child was born at Devonport the following year. Seven more followed over the next 12 years.

Shortly after leaving the army Forbes joined the Church. The 1871 census lists him as Rector of Broad Blunsdon in Wiltshire. He became Vicar of Cleobury Mortimer in 1897, a small rural town in Shropshire.

Reverend Samuel Forbes Frederick Auchmuty died on 9 May 1917.

Photographed by Hurrychund Chintamon of Bombay.
