Rev and Mrs Egerton Boughton Leigh


A carte-de-visite portrait of Reverend Egerton Boughton Leigh, seen here with his wife and one of his children.

Egerton Boughton Leigh was born at Guilsborough in Northamptonshire in or about 1830.

He appears on the 1861 census, the Curate of Harborough Magna in Warwickshire, living at Harborough Magna with one servant.

An announcement of his marriage appeared in the Oxford Times on 23 July 1864: 'July 13, at the parish church, Bispham, the Rev. Egerton Boughton Liegh, M.A., of Harborough Rectory, Rugby, youngest son of J.W. Boughton Leigh, Esq., of Brownsover Hall, Warwickshire, and Guidsborough [sic] Park, Northamptonshire, grandson of Sir Egerton Leigh, Bart., to Alice, only child of the late Thomas Andrew, Esq., of Compstall, Cheshire.'

The marriage produced five daughters, including Grace Agatha Boughton Leigh, who died in infancy, and Theodosia Alianore Boughton Leigh, born in 1865, the baby seen in this portrait.

Reverend Egerton Boughton Leigh died suddenly on 2 September 1870, leaving an estate valued at £2000. Two months after his death, his wife gave birth to another daughter, whom she name Grace Ada.

Alice Boughton Leigh died on 11 December 1889 at 19 Cottesmore Gardens, West Kensington. She left an estate valued at £1233.

Theodosia Alianore Boughton Leigh died on 17 October 1940 at Brighton in Sussex.
