Sitters identified verso by a pencilled inscription verso in a period hand.

An inked inscription recto in the margin reads: 'A somewhat dainty dish to set before a King'.

The boy is probably John Alexander Izon, born 1873. His birth was registered in the district of Foleshill, Warkwickshire. He appears on the 1881 census, living at Combe Road, Sowe, Warwickshire (known officially as Walsgrave-upon-Sowe). His father was John Brown Izon, 'Land owner'.

John Alexander Izon died in Warwickshire in 1900, aged 26.
