Professors Brande and Taylor

William Thomas Brande and Alfred Swaine Taylor

A carte-de-visite portrait of the English chemist Professor William Thomas Brande (the older man on the right), seen here with the toxicologist Professor Alfred Swaine Taylor, who has been called 'the father of British forensic medicine'. Both men were expert witnesses at the 1859 trial of Thomas Smethurst, 'The Richmond Poisoner'.
