Philippe Lamoury

Philippe Lamoury

A carte-de-visite portrait of the noted cellist Philippe Lamoury (1835-1890), who during the 1860s appeared in concert with his violinist brother François Lamoury. The two were billed as the Frères Lamoury.

The sitter has signed the mount recto across the lower margin in ink. He has also inscribed the reverse in ink ‘A mon ami / Guillaume / P. Lamoury / Dublin le 2 Mai 1863’ [To my friend / William / P. Lamoury / Dublin 2 May 1863].

According to a review printed on 4 May 1863 in the Dublin-based journal Freeman's Journal and Daily Commercial Advertiser, ‘the last of the two grand concerts announced by Mr Harris took place on Saturday evening at the Ancient Concert Hall, Great Brunswick-street’. The main attraction of the evening was the soprano Marietta Alboni but the review also mentions that ‘The instrumental portion of the entertainment, which was supported by the Freres Lamoury and Mr Wehli [pianist and conductor], was excellent, both in subjects and execution’.
