Patriarch of Jerusalem


Giuseppe Valerga (1813–1872) was ordained a priest in 1836. In 1847 he was appointed the Roman Catholic patriarch of Jerusalem, a position he filled until his death in 1872. He was the first Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem since the time of the crusades. He also held the title of one of the fathers of the First Vatican Council.
