Mrs Morton Jeffery


A carte-de-visite portrait of Mrs Morton Jeffery (1832-1924), wife of Major John Morton Jeffery of the 98th Foot. Her husband died on 5 June 1880 at Bishop Stortford, aged 63. 'The deceased joined the regiment as ensign in June, 1836, and embarked in December, 1841, with headquarters for China, where he served with our expeditionary force, taking part in the attack and capture of Chin Kiang Foo, and the landing before Nanking (medal).' He retired from the Army in 1853 (Naval & Military Gazette, 16 June 1880).

On 29 September 1849 he married Louisa Donethorne Remmington, daughter of James Remmington, at Bengal in India. The marriage produced one daughter.

The family appear on the 1861 census living at Thremhall Priory, Bishop Stortford, Essex. Mrs Jeffery was born in or about 1832 at Lucknow in India.

Mrs Jeffery appears on the 1901 census living with her daughter, Mrs Sibyl Guscotte, and her granddaughter, Gladys Guscotte (aged 10), at 3 Hereford Road, Paddington. In 1901 the three women were living at 1 Camden Court Mansions in Kensington.

She died, aged 93, on 11 January 1924 at 1, The Terrace, St Pancras. She left effects valued at £6051.
