Mrs Mansfield's child

Mrs Mansfield's child

A carte-de-visite portrait of a small boy posed on an overturned studio prop, as if in the act of riding a wooden horse. He has a toy rifle slung across his shoulder, a small horse whip in his right hand and makeshift reins passed around another studio prop.

The Silvy daybooks in the archives of the National Portrait Gallery in London identify him only as 'Mrs Mansfield - enfant'.

Photographed by Camille Silvy of London on 2 November 1860.
